Not everyone can go below ground, such as the elderly and handicapped, or due to illness any of us may have trouble with steps. Everyone needs somewhere to seek safety. We originally took 10 gauge steel and reinforced it with the 4 inch channel to testing at Texas Tech. We are currently using a 3/16 steel plate for the construction of our above ground units. The channel supports also give you added protection from falling debris.
This makes a safe place for your valuables, but most of all, this shelter is made with your family’s safety in mind, as we know they are the most valuable of all.
If you have questions about lighting and steel units, I have found that a google search of Faraday Cage information to be very informative. A particular YouTube viewing is also a great explanation. It can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t23iXhEiQUc&feature=related&pos=2. The site noted is my favorite to explain that you are safe inside the steel unit, especially so with the fact that the unit we provide has a floor. You are inside of a complete steel box, a faraday cage. We do provide the Economy unit and the Super Saver unit without the floor plate to reduce the cost of the shelter and make it more affordable. With the Economy and Super Saver units, it is recommended to call an electrician to attach a copper wire from the unit to a grounding rod. Typical cost to be expected runs $150-$350 depending on your location. *This information verified by a retired electrician and offered for information purposes only. Same information is basically set out in the FEMA 320 guidebook when referring to units without a steel floor.
